Unit 7 Blog

I enjoyed the meditation practices for this unit because it was easy to relax with the sound of the waves and soft music. I normally relax by listening to music or walking on the beach. I felt as though I was able to focus on imagining someone else beside me. I was able to imagine my father because he passed away 6 months ago and I miss him very much. When the woman spoke of imagining the wisdom of someone else I remembered how wise my father was and the life lessons he taught me through his experience. The practice took my mind off of all the daily clutter and my thoughts of other things that at times will interfere with my peace of mind. I found myself breathing deeper than normal and it felt very relaxed. I am going to implement these exercises daily in my life to improve my health psychologically, physically and spiritually. This was my favorite exercise and I would recommend it to everyone I know that needs to relax and improve their spirituality.

Describe the saying: "One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself". I believe the saying means that we as health professionals need to lead by example. If we want our clients to develop integral health I have to know what I am talking about by my experiences in practicing integral health. If I am teaching a client to implement physical exercise and better eating habits into their lifestyle I need to fully understand and be an example of what I am telling my clients to do. We need to “practice what we preach” so to speak.

  1. The comforts of our parents are always relaxing. For this exercise, I also chose my father to picture. My father also is passed away. Growing up it has always been my father that I looked up to and taught me lessons about life. Being able to picture him, and have communication with him brought me so much comfort. It definitely pulled me away from all the worries I have going on in my head. This exercise is my favorite one so far. Your explanation for the quote describes what it means perfectly. Health professionals do need to be able to lead an example. I cannot imagine someone who looks very unhealthy and disgruntled trying to tell me how to better myself.

    1. I remember when I was in elementary and the coaches would make us run and talk to us about exercise. They were not in the best shape and I always thought to myself I would like to see them run three laps. I believe that we do need to lead by example because we have to be role models for our patients.

    2. Times have changed from when I was in school. I see how my children's coaches are physically in shape and how they motivate them to participate in physical exercise during school. I believe that they are doing a great job being role models to them. I think that if I want my patients to develop healthier lifestyles I need to do the same.

  2. Hi Leonor,

Sorry to hear of your father's passing. I know that 6 months is not a long time, so the pain must still be great. But since you were able to take in his wisdom, his essence and his love, I'm sure it made you feel as if he was right there with you. That's how I felt during my exercise. My Grandmother died about 10 years ago and I felt myself smiling as I thought of her face and the things she used to do and say. Instead of focusing on her not being here, I focused on her spirit and that made me happy.

Your example of one not being able to lead unless they themselves practice is a very good one. You can't fully explain what it's like to be a whole person if you aren't whole, or haven't even attempted to become whole. Even as a bigger of integral health, I think I can say with some confidence that I love who I think I'm turning to. So that's a start.

    1. Hello Hanan,

I enjoyed this exercise the most because I was able to relax and focus on my fathers wisdom. Six months is not a long time and I still feel as though he is still around. I think that if I want my patients to better their lives then I should do the same so that I will know how to guide them. I think its great that you love who you think your turning to.

  3. Leonor,
Hi! I am sorry to hear of your father's passing. It is beautiful that you are able to gain wisdom from him. This exercise shows how though a person may be gone in the physical, they are still very present.
Have you ever seen those shows where the person would be passed away, but there spirit would still be guiding their loved one?
That is what this exercise reminded me of. I can imagine when faced with a decision, you can meditate on that person(whether they are here or passed on), and when you allow the beams to flow from them to you, you began to think as they do. This can help you put yourself in their shoes and come up with a wise decision they would advise.
Keeping that in mind, it is a blessing that you had a wise father. I believe what he has taught you will follow you the rest of your life.

    1. Hello Aja,

I think this exercise was great not just in helping me to relax but also for me to remember my fathers words of wisdom. I agree that even if someone is not physically here they are in spirit. I have seen shows where a loved ones spirit will guide and protect the ones they love.

  4. I said the same thing :) Practice what you preach. That is essentially what is being said. In order to teach we have to learn it and integrate it into our lives. I wouldn't want to learn something from someone that doesn't know exactly what they are teaching me. You put it in a very short and simple way to understand. Great post.
